Welcome to Tennessee Gamma

The Tennessee Gamma chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon is the oldest fraternity at East Tennessee State University.   Our chapter actually started in 1923 as  a local fraternity known as "Nu Sigma Alpha", when ETSU was known as East Tennessee Normal School.   Our founding fathers joined the National fraternity of Sigma Phi Epsilon on April 10th 1954 and we have been in operation ever since.   For the last eighteen years, more men have joined Sigma Phi Epsilon than any other Fraternity.

A SigEp Man follows three cardinal principles:

  • Virtue - Standing aggressively for honesty in all walks of life. Speaking, playing, and living cleanly.
  • Diligence - Persevering determination to perform a task
  • Brotherly Love - True friendships. Aiding a brother in times of need, whatever the circumstances.
Sigma Phi Epsilon was founded at Richmond College in the early 20th Century was attended by less than 300 students. Almost half this number belonged to five fraternities previously chartered on the campus. The little Baptist college, founded in 1830, became home to Sigma Phi Epsilon.

Sigma Phi Epsilon was founded because 12 young collegians hungered for a campus fellowship that neither the college community nor the fraternity system at that time could offer. The desire for brotherhood was in the young men's souls. Sigma Phi Epsilon was needed and was thus formed.
